Sony Blocks Password Resets do to Security Rumor’s

Sony has turned off the PlayStation Network online sign-in service amidst rumors surfacing regarding the security of changing one’s password via the web.

As noted on the PS Blog’s EU forum, a user said:

Web based Password reset system is NOT secure – is vulnerable to exploit using only email and DOB.

Then, Sony had just recently turned off the ability to change a PSN user’s password via their official websites, further adding to the legitimacy of the service being insecure.

A Sony community team member on the forums confirmed via saying:

Hey Guys.

Please note that PSN sign in is currently unavailable for the following services:
PlayStation forums
PlayStation Blog
Music Unlimited via the web client
All PlayStation game title websites

Unfortunately this also means that those who are still trying to change their password password via or will be unable to do so for the time being.  This is due to essential maintenance and at present it is unclear how long this will take.

In the meantime you will still be able to sign into PSN via your PlayStation 3 and PSP devices to connect to game services and view Trophy/Friends information.

We’ll keep you updated on when it’s back up to use.
